South Africa have climbed to fourth spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings after a seven-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first Test on Thursday. The Proteas improved their point-percentage to 47.62 with the victory, which helped them jump over New Zealand and England and take fourth place on the standings. Bangladesh's loss sees their point-percentage drop to 30.56 and they continue to languish in seventh place with India and Australia still remaining in the top two spots on the standings.

Bangladesh's Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and chose to bat first but the decision backfired as South Africa's pacers and spinners thrived in favourable conditions, bowling out Bangladesh for a mere 106. Kagiso Rabada, Wiaan Mulder, and Keshav Maharaj each claimed three wickets.

Bangladesh's spinners fought back, with Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan sharing seven wickets between them. However, a resilient century from Kyle Verreynne, supported by Mulder (54) and Dane Piedt (32), helped South Africa build a commanding 202-run lead.

In the third innings, South Africa's bowlers, led by Rabada, once again dominated, reducing Bangladesh to 112/6. Mehidy Hasan (97) offered strong resistance, forming crucial partnerships with the lower order to push the total to 307. Rabada ended with impressive figures of 6/46, his best in Asia.

US actor Ron Ely, best known for playing the role of Tarzan in the 1960s television show of the same name, has died aged 86.

"The world has lost one of the greatest men it has ever known - and I have lost my dad," the actor's daughter, Kirsten Casale Ely, said in an Instagram post.

Tarzan originally aired on NBC television network from 1966 to 1968, during which time the actor broke a number of bones and was reported to have been attacked by animals while performing his own stunts.

After retiring from acting in 2001, Ely became an author and published two mystery novels.

Ely made a brief return to acting for one television film, Expecting Amish, in 2014, where he played an Amish elder.

In the 1980s, he appeared in other hit television programmes including cruise ship-based comedy The Love Boat, as well as Wonder Woman with star Lynda Carter.

Born in Texas in 1938, Ely went on to marry his high school sweetheart in 1959, before divorcing two years later.

He was also known for hosting the Miss America pageant in the early 1980s, where he met his second wife Valerie Lundeen. The couple went on to have three children.

Lundeen was stabbed to death aged 62 by their son, Cameron, at their California home in 2019. He was then shot dead by police after being deemed a threat by attending officers.

Ron Ely filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the force, though the judge ruled the officers had acted in self-defence.

The Tarzan star died at his home in Los Alamos in Santa Barbara, California on 29 September.

Announcing the death in an Instagram post on Wednesday, the actor's daughter said: "My father was someone that people called a hero. He was an actor, writer, coach, mentor, family man and leader."

She added: "I knew him as my dad - and what a heaven sent honour that has been. To me, he hung the moon."

Authorities in India are evacuating nearly 1.5 million people from the path of an approaching cyclone in the eastern states of Odisha (formerly Orissa) and West Bengal.

Thousands of relief workers have been deployed to minimise damage from Cyclone Dana, which is expected to make landfall in the next 24 hours.

The storm is expected to hit the coastal areas with wind speeds of 100-120 km/h (62-74 mph).

On Wednesday, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said arrangements were in place to ensure the safety of residents in districts along the cyclone’s path.

State officials said they had prepared temporary relief camps with food, water and health facilities.

"We are fully prepared to deal with the storm. Don't panic, be safe and be careful," Majhi told the media.

Odisha is evacuating more than a million people from 14 districts, while West Bengal is evacuating over 300,000 people from coastal areas.

Officials from the two states and rescue teams are on alert. Schools in the coastal regions have been shut.

Flight operations from Bhubaneswar and Kolkata city airports have been suspended from Thursday evening to Friday morning and more than 200 trains have been cancelled as authorities brace for the storm.

Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea and contingency plans have been made for Paradip port in Odisha to ensure safety of the staff and people living nearby.

The weather department has said “heavy to very heavy” rainfall is expected along the coast for the next 24 hours.

Odisha and West Bengal experience severe storms and cyclones every year.

In 1999, more than 10,000 people were killed in a cyclone in Odisha.

Last year, at least 16 people lost their lives when a cyclone lashed India and Bangladesh.

Transportation services have already been affected, with scores of trains and flights cancelled.

India's weather department has said a depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to turn into a severe cyclonic storm by Thursday evening.

Latest updates:

Cyclone Dana has already started landfall and will continue till morning (25th October 2024)

‘unusual bright light’ discovered by the Astronomers which cannot be explained

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was able to capture the glow within three days using the Hubble Space Telescope but the results were baffling.

NASA/Digitized Sky Survey/P. Goudfrooij (STScI)/The Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA)

SciTech News: Astronomers found a unique celestial event as they found the brightest infrared from a short gamma-ray burst ever seen. the rationale why it's so important is because of the glow produced is brighter than what was previously considered as maximum. The half-a-second flash of light from a very violent explosion was detected earlier this year in May. The energy was produced by the explosion of gamma rays billions of light-years faraway from earth which contains more energy than what our Sun will produce in its lifetime.

“It’s amazing to me that after 10 years of studying the same type of phenomenon, we can discover unprecedented behaviour like this,” said Wen-fai Fong, assistant professor of physics and astronomy at Northwestern University and lead author of the study. “It just reveals the diversity of explosions that the universe is capable of producing, which is very exciting.”

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was able to spot the glow within three days using the Hubble Space Telescope. However, the results were baffling because it was 10 times brighter than the earlier prediction.

“These observations don't fit traditional explanations for brief gamma-ray bursts,” said Fong. “Given what we all know about the radio and X-rays from this blast, it just doesn’t match up. The near-infrared emission that we’re finding with Hubble is much too bright.”

In order to know the exact levels of brightness and therefore the distance of the origin, WM Keck Observatory on mauna kea in Hawaii was used by the team.

Scientists believe that explosions like these are caused by two merging neutron stars which cause short gamma ray bursts which will create immense levels of energy. This phenomenon is named Kilonova. These stars are dense to an extent that even a teaspoon of it on Earth can weigh a billion tons. Typically, it's the mass of our Sun compressed into a small city.

“What we detected even outshines the one confirmed kilonova discovered in 2017,” said co-author Jillian Rastinejad, a graduate student with Fong’s team at Northwestern University. “As a first-year graduate student working with real-time data for the first time when this burst happened, it’s remarkable to see our discovery motivate a new and exciting magnetar-boosted model.”

In the future, these events are often recorded better with NASA’s upcoming James Webb Space Telescope which will help scientists understand them better.

“Distances are important in calculating the burst’s true brightness as opposed to its apparent brightness as seen from Earth,” said Fong. “Just as the brightness of a light bulb when it reaches your eye depends on both its luminosity and its distance from you, a burst could be really bright because either it is intrinsically luminous and distant, or not as luminous but much closer to us. With Keck, we were able to determine the true brightness of the burst and thus the energy scale. We found it was to be much more energetic than we originally thought.”

Latest News/Covid-19 Vaccine/Corona Virus Vaccine Update: Serum Institute of India, the world's largest vaccine producer, has said it's made 40 million doses of AstraZeneca's potential Covid-19 vaccine, and can soon begin making Novavax's rival shot, as they both seek regulatory approval.

Serum on Thursday said it had enrolled 1,600 participants in India for late-stage trials of AstraZeneca's candidate, and also plans to seek regulatory approval to run late-stage trials for the Novavax vaccine.

The AstraZeneca vaccine, co-developed by Oxford University , is that the most advanced in human testing in India, Serum said, adding that the company and therefore the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will pursue "early availability" of the shot in India.

Representatives for both Serum and therefore the ICMR declined to comment on whether the 40 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine were meant for supply only in India.

The ICMR, a federal government body, had funded the clinical trial site fees for the AstraZeneca vaccine, Serum said. The company and therefore the ICMR are currently conducting mid-stage clinical trials of the shot at 15 centres across India.

The news came as coronavirus infections in India, the world's second-worst hit country, reached 8.68 million on Thursday and therefore the death toll increased to over 128,000.

India also has at least two home-grown Covid-19 vaccine candidates in development, while local drugmaker Dr Reddy's Labs is carrying out a trial within the country for Russia's vaccine candidate.

Earlier in the week , Pfizer and its partner BioNTech said their vaccine candidate had proven over 90% effective based on initial trial results. Pfizer said it had been committed to advancing its engagement with India's government to supply its potential vaccine within the country.

World News/ US Elections 2020: Democratic candidate Joe Biden moved closer to winning the White House on Friday as he expanded his lead over President Donald Trump in battleground states, yet television networks and news outlets have stayed away from declaring him the victor as officials continued to count votes in a few states where race is exceptionally close.

The Decision Desk HQ has become the first outlet to call the election in favour of Joe Biden, naming him the 46th President of the United States.

"Decision Desk HQ projects that @JoeBiden has won Pennsylvania and its 20 electoral college votes for a total of 273. Joe Biden has been elected the 46th President of the United States of America. Race called at 11-06 08:50 AM EST" said the tweet.

Decision Desk HQ made the call on Twitter after a batch of ballots came in from Philadelphia that put Biden in the lead by 5,500 votes in Pennsylvania.

With more than 100,000 ballots still left to be counted in the state, and with those ballots tilting very heavily toward Biden, there is no realistic path for Donald Trump to win the state. And yet, all the networks have hesitated to say unequivocally that Joe Biden will be the next president.

However, the Decision Desk HQ has not called either Georgia or Arizona — two other states where Biden leads. Decision Desk HQ was launched by Brandon Finnigan in 2014 and he is reported to have conservative leanings.

Other media outlets like Associated Press and Edison Research are also yet to call out the elections.

Here is how different desks are projecting the numbers:

The New York Times projection

The New York Times is taking into account a number of factors before declaring a winner, including race calls made by The Associated Press and Edison Research.

According to the NYT, Joe Biden stood on the cusp of the presidency on Friday, seizing leads over President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania and Georgia and building on his lead in Nevada as he drew ever closer to securing the 270 electoral votes needed to lay claim to the White House.

According to the NYT tracker, Biden had a lead of 253 while Trump was at 214.

The NYT said that in Pennsylvania, the remaining mail ballots are expected to favor Democrats while in Georgia, A small number of absentee, provisional and overseas military ballots remain uncounted.

AP projection

According to the projections from AP, Biden has a lead of 264 electoral votes while Trump is at 214.

In Pennsylvania, Biden has a lead of 49.64% votes while Trump is at 49.21%.

Lionel Messi tells Barcelona he wants to leave

Lionel Messi has informed Barcelona that he wants to leave the club, according to several breaking reports.

Following Barca's 8-2 humiliation against Bayern Munich, there have been suggestions that the argentine wanted to go away Camp Now.

And now, that has apparently been confirmed by the argentine.

Several high-profile outlets and journalists confirmed the maximum amount on Tuesday evening.

Journalist Alfredo Martinex tweeted: "Today is a very sad day for Barça fans. Leo Messi announces that he does not want to continue at Barcelona. After 29 years and 17 in the professional squad, the greatest player in history wants to go, and Bartomeu stays. The president who has not been able to retain him cannot continue."

He later added: "Messi will no longer attend testing this weekend or training. The decision is final."

That claim is supported by Marca, who write: "Leo Messi wants to leave FĂştbol Club Barcelona. Difficult to write this sentence without exclamations.

"The player has sent a burofax to the club expressing his desire to execute the clause provided in his contract by which he can unilaterally leave the club at the end of each season.

"In principle, that clause ended before June 10, but the atypical of this exercise due to the coronavirus opens the way to request now to be released. it is considered a first step to open a negotiation for an exit, based on the fact that its clause is 700 million euros."

The club will no doubt fight the very fact Messi can trigger the clause that was due to expire on June 10 and that we haven't heard the end of this.

One thing is needless to say , Messi wants to go away the club he's been at for quite 29 years.

The biggest transfer story within the history of football is well underway.

Tegu lizard black and white seen for the first time in South Carolina

South Carolina officials have documented the primary confirmed sighting of a black and white tegu lizard, a non-native species which will have a detrimental impact on the state's wildlife.

The female lizard, found and faraway from Lexington County, measured about 2.5 feet long, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) said during a news release on Friday. The species can reach up to 4 feet and weigh quite 10 pounds.

"The introduction of any non-native species can have serious negative impacts on native wildlife. Black and white tegus are no exception," SCDNR herpetologist Andrew Grosse said during a statement.

"Tegus mature and reproduce quickly, though most concerning may be their preference for eggs and the potential impacts to our native ground-nesting birds like turkey and quail, as well as other species such as the state-endangered gopher tortoise."

The lizards, native to South America, are voracious omnivores that hunt birds, small mammals, reptiles and amphibians. They also eat fruits, vegetables, insects and eggs. along side posing a risk to native species, they'll also spread exotic parasites to native wildlife or maybe cause the bacterial contamination of crops.

Black and white tegu lizards established themselves in Georgia and Florida, "likely as a result of release or escape," consistent with the news release. As a non-native species, the animals aren't protected by state wildlife laws or regulations.

The SCDNR has received multiple sighting reports since May, but this is often the primary time it's been confirmed. The species doesn't pose a threat to pet dogs or cats, and aren't considered aggressive toward people.

Officials are urging anyone who spots one among these lizards to require a photograph and report where and when it had been seen.

Serum Institute says reports of Covid-19 Vaccine Covishield vaccine availability in 73 days false

COVISHIELD will be commercialised only after trials are proven successful and all the requisite regulatory approvals are in place.

Serum Institue of India (SII) issued a press release on August 23, clarifying that each one claims surrounding the supply of its COVID-19 vaccine,COVISHIELD, in 73 days are false.

"Presently, the government has granted us permission to only manufacture the vaccine and stockpile it for future use," SII said during a statement they posted on Facebook, adding that COVISHIELD are going to be commercialised only after trials are proven successful and in any case the requisite regulatory approvals are in situ .

The company also took to Twitter to line the record straight:
SII also touched on the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. "The phase-3 trials for the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine are still underway. And only once the vaccine is proven immunogenic and efficacious, SII will confirm its availability, officially," the corporate said.

73 days to COVID-19 vaccine; Indians to get free shots

India's first Covid vaccine-Serum Institute's 'Covishield'- are going to be commercialised in 73 days. Indians are going to be immunised free under the National Immunisation Programme (NIP) as is that the case with all other vaccines under the programme.

"The government has given us a 'special manufacturing priority license' and fast-tracked the trial protocol processes to get the trials completed in 58 days. By this, the first dosing is happening from today in the final phase (Phase III) and the second dosing will happen after 29 days. the final trial data will be out in another 15 days from the second dosing. By that time, we are planning to commercialise Covishield," a Serum Institute of India (SII) top official exclusively revealed.

Earlier, the third phase trials were expected to require a minimum 7-8 months.

The trial among 1600 volunteers at 17 centres, each with about 100 volunteers, started on Aug 22.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan has also said that one among our COVID-19 vaccine candidates is within the third phase of the clinical test . "We are very confident that a vaccine will be developed by end of this year," he said.

The source said the vaccine will belong to Serum Institute, because the company has entered into an exclusive agreement with Astra Zeneca to shop for rights and pay a royalty fee for exclusively selling it in India and 92 other countries. The central government has already indicated to SII that it'll directly procure the vaccines and is getting to immunise Indians for free of charge . Centre has sought 68 crore doses for 130 crore Indian citizens from Serum Institute by June, next year.

For the rest, it's likely to put orders with 'Covaxine' being developed by ICMR and Bharat Biotech and Zydus Cadila's 'ZyCoV-D' if their trials proceed successfully.

Bharat Biotech is yet to point when it might start and finish the trials, though Bharat Biotech's CMD Krishna Ella had said that to make sure safety and efficacy it might not expedite the vaccine with short-cuts.

Serum is beginning to manufacture 6 crore doses per month which can be increased to 10 crore per month by April, 2021. this is often being done by re-engineering its vaccine manufacturing lines that it's spent nearly Rs 200 crore. SII, the most important vaccine maker within the world, features a capacity to form 150 crore doses a year.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has agreed to fund Serum with about $150 million (nearly Rs 1125 crore) to supply and provide around 10 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccine for supply to low income countries. which will help SII to scale back the worth to about Rs 250 per dose from over Rs 1,000 per dose, the source said.

The cracks in the earth's magnetic field have increased, broken into two pieces are in danger, said NASA

The cracks are getting bigger in the earth's magnetic field. Photo courtesy: NASA.

The cracks in the earth's magnetic field have become even larger. A crack has broken into two pieces. As a result, terrestrial civilizations in the area will have to deal with horrific solar particles, solar radiation, and cosmic rays.

The US space agency NASA has given this news in a recent report. As a result, the International Space Station orbiting through the area could be damaged by critical equipment of various artificial satellites. Telecommunication, electricity connection and navigation system in the area may also be disrupted.

This magnetic field of the Earth surrounds our bluish planet and extends for millions of kilometers in space. Another name for it is 'Geomagnetic Field'. It is this magnetic field that saves us every moment from the scorching solar radiation and the toxic cosmic rays. When solar radiation and cosmic rays arrive, it is this magnetic field of the earth that pushes it away, as far as possible.

From the seventies of the last century, the earth's magnetic field began to weaken. That's when a huge crack appeared in this magnetic field. Its name is 'South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA)'. This fissure exists in the Earth's magnetic field over South America and the South Atlantic Ocean.

According to a recent NASA report, the Earth's magnetic field has weakened over the past 50 years. The cracks in the earth's magnetic field over South America and the South Atlantic Ocean have become so large in size that they have even broken in two. Made of two large cracks.

NASA observed, "The cracks in the Earth's magnetic field are gradually increasing towards the west. And the magnetic field in that area is getting weaker and weaker. ”

As a result, NASA has warned that the area is in danger in the coming days. For those who live in the area, the natural magnetic 'shield' to prevent the invasion of solar particles, solar radiation and cosmic rays has become weak enough. As a result, the International Space Station orbiting the Earth through that area could suffer catastrophic damage to vital parts of artificial satellites due to solar radiation and cosmic rays.

Earlier in May, the European Space Agency (ESA) reported that the Earth's magnetic field had weakened by 9 percent in the last 200 years. And in the area of the magnetic field where the crack has grown in size and broken into two pieces, the magnetic field has weakened by 8% in the last 50 years.

Scientists say that the cause of this increase in the Earth's magnetic field is geo-natural. These cracks have formed and are growing because the molten lava flow and the magnetic axis are tilted a little more deep inside the earth. The Earth's magnetic field is also increasing because the North and South Poles of the Earth are not properly north and south respectively.
