Second Test, Pune (day three of five)

New Zealand 259 (Conway 76; Sundar 7-59) & 255 (Latham 86; Sundar 4-56)

India 156 (Santner 7-53) & 245 (Jaiswal 77; Santner 6-104)

New Zealand won by 113 runs; lead series 2-0

New Zealand completed a historic first Test series victory in India with a 113-run win in the second Test that ended the hosts' 12-year unbeaten streak.

The triumph in Pune gives the Black Caps an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series and ends India's remarkable run of 18 consecutive home series wins since Alastair Cook's England clinched a famous 2-1 triumph in December 2012.

After New Zealand were bowled out for 255 on the third morning, India were set 359 to win and maintain their proud unbeaten home record.

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal's half-century gave them hope but that was soon extinguished by Mitchell Santner, who took 6-104 to finish with 13 wickets in the match.

India were eventually bowled out for 245 in the evening session.

"Every time you take wickets, you get a little more confident," said Santner, who had never taken a Test five-for before this match.

"I felt that. Every time I got a wicket, it got a little better."

The hosts had made a rapid start thanks to Jaiswal's quickfire 77, but, having taken seven wickets in the first innings, Santner began to work his magic again.

Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Jaiswal all fell to the left-arm spinner before Santner ran out Rishabh Pant and he proceeded to claim the key wicket of Virat Kohli as India collapsed to 147-5.

"It is a collective failure," said India captain Rohit. "The team has failed to accept the challenge thrown at us."

There was some resistance from Ravindra Jadeja but the all-rounder was the last man out for 42, leaving New Zealand to celebrate a comprehensive, famous victory.

In one of the most calamitous collapses of all time in high-level cricket, an Australia One-Day Cup match between Western Australia and Tasmania at the WACA in Perth saw the hosts lose their final eight wickets for a solitary run as they were bowled out for 53.

Despite boasting plenty of Australian internationals such as Cameron Bancroft and Josh Inglis, the Perth-based team saw none of their final seven batters register a single run, as six ducks meant that their innings went from 52/2 to 53/10 in a matter of minutes.

In a 28-ball period, the dismissal of Cameron Bancroft triggered an incredible procession of batters returning to the dressing room.

Beau Webster of Tasmania was the wrecker-in-chief for his team, as he took 6 wickets, and 5 of those final 8 within the collapse. From the other end, Billy Stanlake also contributed with 3 wickets, with Tom Rogers having dismissed Aaron Hardie for the first wicket of the innings.

Western Australia lost 5 wickets at the score of 52, going from 52-2 to 52-7 in 14 deliveries. Any hopes of recovery were quickly dashed soon after.

WA had originally gotten off to a decent start despite losing Aaron Hardie early in the innings. Bancroft and D’Arcy Short stitched together a partnership to help the team to 45/1, but Short was dismissed at that point.

Breaking the partnership provided visiting Tasmania the opportunity to add on some more wickets, but the collapse was unlike anything they would have expected from their opposition.

Mini-collapse during chase as well

In response, needing only 54 from 50 overs, Tasmania unsurprisingly chased down the target comfortably. Mitchell Owen opened and got them off to a blazing start, but there would have been slight concerns as Tasmania themselves suffered a mini-collapse, going from 33-0 to 34-3.

The experience of Matthew Wade meant that there were no more hiccups, however, as he helped wrap up the chase within 8.3 overs.

This massive loss now sees Western Australia at the bottom of the table in the domestic one-day competition, with one win and three losses in four matches.Tasmania rise to third, behind powerhouses New South Wales and Victoria.

The WACA will be the focus of the cricket world in a month's time, as it prepares to host the opening Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia, beginning on November 22.

South Africa have climbed to fourth spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings after a seven-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first Test on Thursday. The Proteas improved their point-percentage to 47.62 with the victory, which helped them jump over New Zealand and England and take fourth place on the standings. Bangladesh's loss sees their point-percentage drop to 30.56 and they continue to languish in seventh place with India and Australia still remaining in the top two spots on the standings.

Bangladesh's Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and chose to bat first but the decision backfired as South Africa's pacers and spinners thrived in favourable conditions, bowling out Bangladesh for a mere 106. Kagiso Rabada, Wiaan Mulder, and Keshav Maharaj each claimed three wickets.

Bangladesh's spinners fought back, with Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan sharing seven wickets between them. However, a resilient century from Kyle Verreynne, supported by Mulder (54) and Dane Piedt (32), helped South Africa build a commanding 202-run lead.

In the third innings, South Africa's bowlers, led by Rabada, once again dominated, reducing Bangladesh to 112/6. Mehidy Hasan (97) offered strong resistance, forming crucial partnerships with the lower order to push the total to 307. Rabada ended with impressive figures of 6/46, his best in Asia.

Not only Ganguly but also Board Secretary Jay Shah and other senior officials wanted Laxman to serve as the head of NCA.

Earlier, BCCI sources had said that we should not forget that Laxman has a special relationship with Rahul Dravid. It will be a very good combination that both of them work to take Indian cricket forward. Significantly, Dravid will start his work as the head coach of Team India from the series against New Zealand. Dravid has mentioned his roadmap after becoming the coach and how he wants to carry forward the legacy of former coach Ravi Shastri.

After becoming the NCA chief, now Laxman will have to shift from his hometown Hyderabad to Bangalore. Laxman is also currently the mentor of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. Apart from this, he has also served as the batting consultant of the Cricket Association of Bengal till the beginning of this year. Laxman will now have to relinquish all those positions to avoid issues of conflict of interest, which brings him double benefits.

Latest News World/Cricket News: Australia wins their first T20 World Cup title, defeating New Zealand by eight wickets in the final at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. Having been beaten by England in the 2010 final in Bridgetown, Barbados, the Australians were not to be denied this time around as they produced a brilliant batting display in the chase to completely outclass New Zealand. Mitchell Marsh (77 not out) and David Warner were the stars in chase for Australia while Josh Hazlewood was the standout with the ball in hand.

Chasing a stiff target of 173, the Aussies overhauled New Zealand's score with seven balls remaining.

Australia started well with Warner hitting a couple of boundaries. However, Aaron Finch's struggles at the top of the order continued as Trent Boult sent him packing for just 5.

Mitchell Marsh came out to bat at the fall of Finch's wicket, and immediately hit the ground running, smashing a six and back-to-back fours off the first three balls he faced. The Australian all-rounder didn't look back after that and proceeded to pound the New Zealand bowling lineup into submission.

If the Marsh barrage wasn't enough, New Zealand bowlers had to also contend with an in-form Warner, who too found the boundary at will.

Warner was the first to score his half-century, whacking a six of James Neesham to reach the landmark.

Warner and Marsh added 92 runs off just 59 balls to put Australia in complete control in the chase.

Boult returned to give New Zealand a much-needed breakthrough, removing the dangerous Warner for 53 but there was no stopping Marsh.

The lanky Australian all-rounder continued to torment the New Zealand bowlers, also scoring a half-century. He was joined by Glenn Maxwell, who took a couple of deliveries to get going, before teeing off as well.

Marsh and Maxwell kept finding the boundaries as New Zealand just couldn't find a way to keep the Australian batters quiet.

In the end, Maxwell finished things off with reverse ramp to third man to send the team into ecstacy.

Earlier, put into bat, Martin Guptill and Daryl Mitchell gave New Zealand a solid solid start. Mitchell, who was the hero for New Zealand in the semi-final against Pakistan, failed to replicate his performance and was dismissed by Josh Hazlewood for 11.

Guptill and captain Kane Williamson steadied the New Zealand innings but did so at the cost of the run-rate. The duo made slow progress and Australian bowlers kept things on a tight leash.

But it all changed when Williamson, batting on 21, was dropped by Hazlewood in the deep. Williamson suddenly stepped on the accelerator and flayed the Australian attack. Despite losing Guptill, the New Zealand skipper continued to attack the Australians.

The stylish right-hander tore Mitchell Starc apart as New Zealand zoomed to a big total. Hazlewood returned to remove Glenn Phillips and Williamson in the same over. Williamson fell for 85 just 48 balls in what was one of the most memorable innings of any T20 World Cup.

James Neesham provided some late fireworks as New Zealand posted 172 for four in their 20 overs.

Cricket News: BCCI President Sourav Ganguly recently dropped a major update about the rumours of former Indian captain Rahul Dravid being named as the coming head coach of the Indian cricket team and it clearly adds a sense of vagueness around all the reports that have been published in the last many days.

“ There’s no confirmation, I only read it in the newspapers. There's due process. It has beenadvertised. However, then he will,"Ganguly said on the‘Salaam Cricket’ show of Aaj Tak suggesting that he has no idea how or why did the reports of Dravid becoming the coming head coach emerged, If he wants to apply.

“ Right now, he's the director of NCA. He came to meet us in Dubai to talk about NCA. How to take it forward. We all believe the NCA has a big role in developing the future of Indian cricket. NCA creates the next generation of Indian cricketers. So, he wanted to discuss that,"Ganguly added.

Before Ganguly’s disclosure, it was reported that Dravid had said yes to replace Ravi Shastri following the end of Team India’s T20 World Cup 2021 campaign and that his first assignment as the coach would be to take on a traveling New Zealand team on home turf in the second half of November.

It was also reported that Dravid’s trusted assistant, Paras Mhambrey was also being appointed as the coming bowling coach for the Men in Blue, while Vikram Rathour and R Sridar were to continue as the batting and fielding coaches, respectively.

In the second week of October, mere days before the said reports were published, the BCCI had announced that the had tried to convince Dravid into taking the job but he'd politely declined the offer as he wanted to concentrate more on developing the youth of Indian cricket as the head of the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

“ We had a chat with him earlier too on whether he wants to take up the coaching role of the senior side but he did n’t seem that interested. His stand is pretty much the same even now. He asked for some time. Let’s see what happens,"Ganguly said at the show.

Delhi Capitals beat Chennai Super Kings by 44 runs to register their second consecutive win of IPL 2020 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday. Chasing 176 to win, Chennai Super Kings got off to a poor start as they lost both their openers Shane Watson and Murali Vjay inside the powerplay. Watson got out to Axar Patel while Vijay was removed by Anrich Nortje. Ruturaj Gaikwad who came into bat at No. 4 did not impress as he got run out after scoring just five runs. After losing two quick wickets, Faf du Plessis and Kedar Jadhav stitched a good partnership to stay CSK hopes alive within the game. Anrich Nortje dismissed Jadhav to hand his side an important breakthrough. MS Dhoni came in to bat but the damage was already done. Nortje and Rabada bowled brilliantly towards the end to seal the massive for their side. Earlier, Prithvi Shaw (64 off 43) scored his 5th IPL half-century as Delhi Capitals posted 175/3 against CSK. Shaw got support from his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan (35 runs off 27) who played with more caution up front but more than made up for it once the field restriction were lifted. The duo added 36 runs within the first six overs without any loss and capitalised on the beginning after the powerplay, taking aggressive approach against the CSK spinners. Both the players found boundaries at will and looked they're going to take the game faraway from them. However that wasn't to be as Piyush Chawla paid off his captain's faith on him by removing both the openers in quick succession to stop the run flow.

In this match, Punjab captain KL Rahul played a brilliant unbeaten innings of 132 runs. At the same time, opposition captain Virat Kohli was a complete flop and scored a run and became the victim of fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell. Not only this, the team could not play even the full 20 overs of its quota and was all out for 107 runs in 17 overs. Virat could not forget the pain of the unilateral defeat from Punjab that another bad news has come for him before that.

Captain Kohli has been fined Rs 12 lakh for this. Now Kohli will have to pay Rs 12 lakh as penalty. In this match, nothing went well for Virat Kohli. KL Rahul, who smashed a century before his hand, missed two easy catches, after that he could not make a mark even in batting.

Virat Kohli left Rahul's catch off the ball of Navdeep Saini in the 18th over of the Punjab innings. Rahul took full advantage of this opportunity and in 19 overs, RCB team's leading fast bowler Dale Steyn scored 26 runs in the same over with the help of three sixes and two fours. Not only this, Virat's captaincy was questioned when he gave the ball to young Shivam Dubey in the 20th over. In this over, Rahul scored 23 runs and took the team's score to 200.

Rohit Sharma was the talisman for Mumbai Indians (MI), leading them to a 49-run victory against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 match, at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi . After winning the man of the match award, the MI captain said, "It was all about how we executed our plans today, we were in good positions and it was all about being ruthless". He went on to add that the wicket was good, and his team took advantage of it. Speaking about his batting display, he revealed that he had been practicing his pull shots lately.

Scoring 80 off 54 deliveries, Rohit also said that he wanted to spend a while within the middle overs, which he wasn't ready to neutralize the defeat to Chennai Super Kings (CSK). "Was looking to spend some time in the middle; it didn't come out well in the first innings but glad to have done it tonight," quipped Rohit.

Rohit revealed that MI had planned a pace attack for the Wankhede Stadium, but COVID-19 spoiled their plans. "We never knew that the IPL would happen in the UAE so we wanted a pace attack that was strong for the Wankhede", he said. He praised Trent Boult and James Pattinson for performing well, although they joined the team late.

Speaking about his dismissal, he revealed that he was exhausted. "It takes a lot out of you to play in these conditions. Maybe i was a bit tired in the end and it was a lesson for us that one set batsmen needs to bat deep till the end," he stated. Meanwhile, KKR captain Dinesh Karthik felt that his team must improve in all areas. "I think we had areas to do well in bat and ball. i think it was a pretty rusty day to be honest," he said.

Karthik also feels his side must get accustomed the conditions in United Arab Emirates (UAE). MI face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their next match on September 28. Meanwhile, KKR face SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) on September 26.
